8-15 Supreme Court Won't Here Dassey Case

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The Wisconsin Supreme Court won't hear a Manitowoc man's arguments for a new trial in one of the state's most notorious homicides. Brendan Dassey, now 23, was sentenced to life in prison with no parole for 41 years in 2007 in connection with the 2005 slaying of Teresa Halbach in Manitowoc County. The killing drew extraordinary attention because Dassey's uncle, Steven Avery, also was convicted in the crime. Avery had spent 18 years in prison for rape before DNA samples proved another man committed that crime. Dassey's attorneys contend police coerced his confession and his trial attorneys were ineffective. A state appeals court rejected those arguments this past January. The Supreme Court announced on Wednesday it won't hear Dassey's case. The announcement offered no explanation.
