Fire Chief Pete O’Leary tells WFDL news on the scene the fire started when hot oill splattered on the kitchen stove of one of the units and quickly spread. "There was an unattended cooking fire that extended up into the wall. The residents, a couple of adults and children, they had to go out a first floor window in order the escape the fire," O'Leary said. "They could not get by the door. By the time they noticed the fire the heat was so intense they had to bail out the window." The apartment complex was evacuated and the Red Cross is assisting the more than two dozen displaced residents.
