A Fond du Lac man told investigators he smoked marijuana and
drank a bottle of whiskey the night before he struck and critically injured
a Fond du Lac woman. Forty seven
year old Aarron Schmitz made his initial Fond du lac court appearance Friday on charges of reckless injury and
bail jumping.
Bail was set at $25,000 cash. Investigators say Schmitz was driving a vehicle that veered off Winnebago Drive near Bechaud Beach
Drive Tuesday striking 46 year old Traci Luther of Fond du Lac. Sheriff’s Captain Rick Olig says it appears Schmitz may have fallen asleep at the wheel. According to a criminal complaint Schmitz told investigators
he smoked three cigar size marijuana doobies and drank an entire liter bottle of
whiskey the night before. Schmitz told investigators he had no idea what happened and “should
have quit driving.” After conducting a drug recognition evaluation of Schmitz Fond
du lac County Sheriff’s sergeant Renee Schuster said it was her opinion Schmitz was still
recovering from the night before and that rendered him unable to operate a motor vehicle
safely. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 24th. Luther remains in critical condition at Theda
Clark Regional Medical Center in Neenah.
