MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A new analysis of Gov. Scott Walker's budget proposal shows that state support for public K-12 education would drop slightly as a percentage of their overall budget over the next two years.
The nonpartisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau analysis was released in advance of the Legislature's budget committee taking up Walker's school funding proposal on Wednesday. It shows that in this school year, state support of public schools was 61.9 percent. That's projected to drop to 61.4 percent next year and then go up slightly to 61.7 percent in the second year of the budget. Walker is proposing a 1 percentage point increase in school aids over each of the next two years. However, he is not calling for any increase in per-pupil spending.
