MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Republican Senate President Mike Ellis says legislative leaders and Gov. Scott Walker have reached an impasse over talks to find compromise on expanding private school vouchers.
Ellis told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the lawmakers and Walker will continue to negotiate, but he does not think they can reach a deal by Wednesday. That is when the Legislature's budget-writing committee is scheduled to vote on Walker's plan to expand vouchers to nine communities beyond Milwaukee and Racine. Ellis says the meeting was with Walker, Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald and Senate Education Committee chairman Sen. Luther Olsen.
Ellis says it was a good meeting, "but we couldn't reach any consensus."
