MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The Chequamegon Nicolet National Forest workers are heading home due to the federal government shutdown. Spokeswoman Megan Healy said Tuesday the forest's offices are shutting down and employees are waiting for specific instructions on procedures, such as getting campers out of campgrounds, chaining gates, closing boat rentals and closing down food stands. She says firefighters and law enforcement officers are exempt from the shutdown and will stay on the job. A click on a link to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore's official website Tuesday pulled up a message saying all national parks have been closed. Department of the Interior officials referred questions to a spokeswoman. An email to her bounced back saying she was out of the office due to the shutdown.
