The railroad crossing at Lakeshore Drive in the village of
North Fond du Lac is closing this morning and village officials hope that will
end the seemingly constant sound of train
whistles. The village board gave its
final vote last night on erecting barricades at the crossing.
The crossing is closed except for emergency vehicles. Village administrator
Chuck Hornung says train whistles have been sounding at all hours of the day and night
since the Federal Railroad Administration lifted the village quiet zone last month. Hornung says the village explored several avenues without
success to get an extension to the quiet zone.
