On Saturday, October 26, 2013, at approximately 2:25 pm, the
Fond du Lac County Communications Center received a report of a marsh fire on
CTH HHH west of Schoenborn Road in the Township of Calumet. Due to the dry
conditions and high winds, the fire spread quickly through the marsh. The Town of
Calumet Fire Department responded and requested mutual aid from 14 area fire
departments to assist in containing the fire.
CTH HHH and CTH HH between Schoenborn Road and Townhall Road needed to
be closed for a period of time to allow for the fire department vehicles to
access and transport water to the fire scene. Investigation
into the cause indicated the fire started from dry cattails being packed up
into and around the engine and exhaust components of an ATV which was being
operated by a hunter through the cattails. No one was
injured and property damage was limited to approximately 80 acres of cattail
marsh.
