10-28-13 community service officers

Fond du lac police say an expanded Community Service Officer program is a win-win situation for the officers and the community.  The Fond du Lac city budget approved last week includes $66,000
to fund five additional CSOs and to increase the hours of two existing summertime CSOs.  Assistant Police Chief Steve Klein says the CSOs handle duties that help free up patrol officers to focus on more serious  crime.  Klein says under the program the CSOs receive college credit but no pay during
the school year…and are paid when they work during the summer.  Klein says a lot of the CSOs end up applying for an open officer’s position after they graduate.
