6-28-13 republican lawmakers draw up plan to nix treasurer and secretary of state

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Two Republicans have drawn up a constitutional amendment that would eliminate the state treasurer and secretary of state positions.  Reps. Michael Schraa and Tyler August are trying to secure co-sponsors for the measure. They say both offices no longer have any real responsibilities and eliminating them would save taxpayer dollars. August called the offices "meaningless" in a statement Thursday.   Secretary of State Doug LaFollette, a Democrat, called the amendment silly. He says lawmakers should restore his office's duties to bring the post's responsibilities back in line with secretaries of state elsewhere in the country.  A constitutional amendment must pass two consecutive legislative sessions and a statewide referendum. The earliest the referendum could take place would be 2015.
