There son, 1st Lieutenant David Johnson was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2012. The exemption would cover income earned during the year the soldier is killed and in the year before if the soldier hasn’t filed a return for that year. The exemption begins with the current tax year. Walker says the new law “sends and important message of gratitude to fallen services members and their families.”
