12-17-13 off duty fdl police officer rescused on lake winnebago

An off duty Fond du lac police officer received non life threatening injuries  following a snowmobile accident on Lake Winnebago over the weekend.  Thirty three year old Brian Bednarek was listed in good condition at St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac after his snowmobile hit an ice shove about three and a half miles off the east shore of the lake in Calumet County.  Fond du lac County Sheriff’s Sergeant Jeff Bonack says the Sheriff’s department’s ice rescue boat assisted the Calumet County
Sheriff’s Department Dive team to rescue Bednarek after his brother reported  him missing on Lake Winnebago Sunday afternoon .   Sergant Bonack says the accident points to how dangerous the conditions are on Lake Winnebago.   "You can never be too safe, too careful, bad things can happen out there,"  Bonack told AM 1170 WFDL's Between the Lines program.  "When you are out in the elements like that you need to be prepared for the worst.  We've had a stretch of cold weather where people think that with the duration of that cold weather that lakes are froze tight.  I'm here to tell you absolutely they are not."
