7-8-13 fdl radium removal project nearly complete

Ten months after the Fond du lac city council gave approval to implement  a new radium removal system, the switchover is nearly complete.   Last fall the council authorized the conversion from an ion-exchange system to an Hydrous Manganese Oxide Manganese Oxide or HMO system.  Fond du lac city manager  Joe Moore says the new system is operating well.  The decision to switch was made after the ion-exchange system was plagued with filtering problems from the star.  City officials say the HMO system will be less expensive to operate and allow for more efficient plant operations,
removing not only radium but lead and arsenic as well.  Nearly five years ago the council voted to blend Lake Winnebago water as a solution,  but after new councilmembers were elected, they reversed that decision.  That  change ended up costing taxpayers millions of dollars more than it would have cost to use Lake Winnebago water.
