Three health groups are reacting to a provision left in the
state budget that would prohibit local communities from banning surgary foods
and drinks. The budget signed by the governor includes a
provision prohibiting local governments from passing public health ordinances
based on nutritional
standards. The
American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, American Heart Association and Health First Wisconsin issued a joint
statement criticizing the measure. Health
First director Maureen Busalacchi says at a time when the state is facing record obesity rates the measure
restricts rather than expands the avenues in which local elected officials can promote
healthy eating in their own communities. Busalacchi says the ban will have a much wider unintended
impact including limiting employee wellness programs.
