A local effort to take big money out of politics is starting
the next phase in an effort to amend the U.S. constitution regarding
election donations. The group Move to Amend is starting a petition drive this
month that will continue through June in an effort to gather enough
signatures to put the question on the November ballot. The constitutional amendment reads that inalienable rights
belong to human beings and that money is not a form of protected free speech
under the First Amendment and can be regulated in political campaigns.
The group held a forum at the Marian University Stayer
Center Thursday night featuring the director
of the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign, Mike McCabe. McCabe says the movement has
garnered bi-partisan citizen support across the state and country. He says already more than 500 communities
in 16 states have voted to support this
constitutional amendment.
