An agricultural runoff management specialist with the DNR
says a large manure spill at a Fond du Lac County mega-dairy farm
this week is unfortunate.
On Monday an estimated 50,000 gallons of manure
spilled at Lake Breeze Dairy near Pipe. DNR ag runoff management specialist Casey Jones says the
spill was caused by a thumb-size hole in a transfer line used to pump manure
to a field. She says the hose was leaking for more than two hours. Jones says the manure polluted nearby Pipe Creek and flowed west to
Lake Winnebago. "Its a pretty big spill, its one of the worst spills I've seen in my six years in the program," Jones told WFDL news. Jones says the farm reacted quickly when the spill was
discovered. She says the DNR will continue to investigate, ask for
written documentation and come up with a remediation plan to make sure it doesn’t
happen again. The Fond du Lac County Public Health Department has been
made aware of the situation.
