5-27-14 veterans scams

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — With Memorial Day coming up, the Wisconsin Better Business Bureau is warning about scams that are aimed at veterans, especially elderly service members.  For example, veterans might receive ads for military loans that offer guaranteed cash, instant approval or no credit check. Legitimate lenders don't make such offers.  Veterans might also receive offers to buy out their benefits plans. Some offers could be legitimate, but others might only offer 30 percent to 40 percent of the actual value. The bureau advises veterans to research thoroughly before signing anything over. Other scams offer special discounts to veterans on products like cars or life insurance, but those who respond get pushed toward fraudulent deals or are targeted with high-pressure sales tactics.  The bureau offers tips and warnings on its website at WWW DOT bbb DOT org SLASH Wisconsin.
