5-30-14 fdl county parks director-manure spill reaction

Signs are being posted at Columbia Park warning people to stay out of the water following a massive manure spill early Monday morning at a Fond du Lac County dairy farm.  More than 50,000 gallons of manure spilled into Pipe Creek, making its way to Lake Winnebago…raising concerns about contamination. Fond du Lac County Parks director Sam Tobias says he’s also concerned about communication regarding the spill after it was reported  to the DNR.  Tobias says he didn’t learn about the spill until he was contacted by
a concerned citizen more than 24 hours later.  Tobias says he wasn’t able to confirm the spill until Wednesday morning after he made several inquiries.  "We can improve that.  I don't mean to be overly critical but I think its a challenge for us.  Its something we've got to look at and we've got to improve,"  Tobias told WFDL news.  Tobias says the local Emergency Management and Sheriff’s Office should

have been notified right away.
