A Fond du Lac police detective who went on a post-election
rant on his Facebook page following the District Attorney race two years
ago has taken out papers to run for
sheriff. Bill Ledger plans to challenge incumbent Sheriff Mick Fink
in an August Republican primary. Following the 2012
District attorney’s race won by District attorney Eric Toney, Ledger
posted disparaging comments about Toney, the sheriff and a private citizen. Ledger had backed incumbent DA, Dan Kaminsky,
during the election. Ledger
wrote “Nice job sheriff, you won the election not Eric Toney. This
should be a sad four years for crime victims. What a joke.” Ledger also posted “…we
all know this campaign was run thru the sheriff, by the sheriff, on the back of the sheriff.” Then police captain Steve Klein said Ledger was talked to but not disciplined for posting
the comments, stating it was simply political rhetoric following a heated race and
that they (comments) are protected by the First Amendment.
