Law enforcement throughout the state gathered at ceremonies
this week to pay tribute to those officers that have given their
lives in the line of duty.
Fond du lac police observed Peace officers Memorial day Thursday night with a ceremony at the police memorial in Hamilton Park.
Three Fond du Lac police officers have been killed in the line of duty, most recently Craig Birkholz on March
20th, 2011. Ceremonies were also held in Juneau where Waupun police
chief Dale Heeringa says plans are in the works for a police
memorial. In addition to police officers Heeringa says the Dodge County memorial would also recognize
correctional officers
who have been killed in the line of duty. "We have four correctional institutions in Dodge County, and being that we are so heavy with corrections which is affiliated with law enforcement, they're also involved in our memorial event and will have correctional officers listed on this memorial when its erected," Heeringa told AM 1170 WFDL's Between the Lines program. Heeringa says its important to remember that tragedy can
strike in any community, big or small.
