MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A Democratic state lawmaker from Madison is proposing that marijuana be legalized for both recreational and medicinal purposes. State Rep. Melissa Sargent is circulating a bill to legalize pot, but it will certainly be snuffed out by Republicans who control both the Assembly and Senate and oppose such an effort. Even when Democrats controlled the Legislature they could not garner enough support to pass a more limited bill legalizing marijuana solely for medical purposes.
Sargent said in a press release that she believes legalizing pot would address racial disparities in drug arrests, provide medical benefits, save law enforcement time and money, and save the state money.
More attention has been focused on legalizing marijuana since voters in Colorado and Washington state approved it starting this year.
