1-25-14 wi special olympics outdoor winter games cancelled

RIB MOUNTAIN, Wis. (AP) — Subzero temperatures have canceled the Special Olympics Wisconsin outdoor winter games in central Wisconsin, disappointing more than 200 athletes from around the state.  It's the second consecutive year the outdoor games have been canceled because of the weather. Last year there wasn't enough snow.  Indoor activities associated with the games, including a dance Saturday night at the Holiday Inn in Rothschild, will still be held.  Saturday wind chills could hit 15 below zero with Sunday slightly colder. Special Olympics regional director Jerry Lyon says the safety of the athletes and volunteers is the top priority.  Alpine skiing and snowboarding competition was to be held at Granite Peak Ski Area. Snowshoe racing and cross-country skiing were scheduled for Nine Mile County Forest Recreation Area.
