9-20-13 wasp population

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — The pace may be picking up for businesses that eradicate bees and wasps in Wisconsin. But, a bug expert says it hasn't been a bad year for the pesky insects.  The wasp and hornet population reaches its peak in late summer, with hot and dry weather boosting their numbers.
Dennis Huber's Hartford business is called The Bee Guy. Huber handles calls in eastern Wisconsin from Door County to Milwaukee and in eastern Dane County. Huber says his calls have picked up and will likely be 40 to 50 percent ahead of last year.  University of Wisconsin-Extension entomologist Phil Pellitteri tells Press-Gazette Media that overall, it's not a bad year for yellow jacket wasps. He says the population is one-tenth of what he's seen in bad years when eating outdoors or visiting a farmers market was troublesome.
