2-6-14 fdl water main breaks

While several Fond du Lac residents have had to deal with frozen water pipes this winter…so far city water main breaks have not been a big problem.  Water Utility manager Kathy Scharf says there have been fewer
water main breaks than last year.  "Since the first of the year we're up to 14 water main breaks,"  Scharf told WFDL news.  "Last year at this time we were nearing 22-25 breaks by the end of January."  But Scharf says that could change soon.   "Streets were there is concrete pavement the frost is getting driven down deeper and deeper by the cars driving on them.  We've seen a number of breaks on East Division Street and busier streets where you have constant traffic,"  Scharf said.  Scharf says frost is nearing five feet deep and many of the city water mains are six feet deep.
