Law enforcement, social services, and health care
professionals are gathering next month in Fond du Lac and Dodge counties to address the growing problem of opiate and heroin
addiction. A heroin summit is scheduled for March 11th at
Fond du Lac’s Marian University and a town hall meeting will be held two days
later at the Dodgeland School in Juneau. Dodge County Sheriff Pat Ninmann says in Dodge County the
number of people who have died from accidental opiate overdoses has
doubled in the past year and most of those who die first use opiates
in high school. Ninmann says those addicted often turn to crime to support
their habit. In Fond du Lac County four people died from heroin overdoses
last year and dozens of lives were saved when paramedics used the
heroin antidote Narcan.
