MILWAUKEE (AP) — Judges in Milwaukee and Dane counties were marrying gay couples for a second day Saturday following a federal judge's ruling overturning Wisconsin's same-sex marriage ban.
More than 60 couples were married in each county Friday, as courthouses stayed open late following the judge's decision earlier that day. Milwaukee County Clerk Joe Czarnezki says couples were lined up outside his courthouse at 6 a.m. yesterday, three hours before it opened. About 45 couples had applied for marriage licenses within 30 minutes of the doors opening Saturday morning. Republican Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen insists that Friday's ruling didn't clear the way for same-sex marriages to begin. He has sought an emergency order in federal court to stop more marriage licenses from being issued.
