MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A Republican prosecutor running for attorney general told a liberal group earlier this year that it's not unusual for legislators to work with campaign donors on legislation, calling the collaboration the "essence" of government. One Wisconsin Now leader Scot Ross says Waukesha County District Attorney Brad Schimel's remarks show he believes lawmakers can be bought and sold. Schimel didn't immediately return a telephone message. One Wisconsin Now asked Schimel in January to investigate whether Rep. Joel Kleefisch broke any laws by crafting a bill that would have reduced child support payments for the wealthy at the direction of Michael Eisenga. He has donated heavily to Kleefisch and his wife, Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch, and wanted to reduce his child support payments.
Kleefisch killed the bill amid intense media scrutiny.
