NEENAH, Wis. (AP) — Joshua Richards was shot and killed in a downtown Appleton bar last December. But his heart lives on in Benjamin Adler. The 47-year-old traveled from Island Lake, Illinois to meet Richard's family Wednesday in Neenah, five months after receiving the transplant. Adler was one of seven people to receive organs from the 25-year-old Richards. Adler had his first heart attack in 2003, followed by four more over the following decade. Adler says doctors told him they found a blood clot the morning of the transplant and he likely wouldn't have lived another 24 hours without the heart.
Jackie Pische says losing her son was devastating but seeing Adler was awesome. She says her son signed up to be an organ donor at age 16.
