A UW Oshkosh journalism professor says he thinks an article published in the Fond du lac High School newspaper was
absolutely incredible quality. Professor Vince Filak tells AM 1170 WFDL's Between the Lines program the article was better
than many investigative stories
found in college or even professional newspapers. The article written by senior Tanvi Kumar focused on the
rape culture at Fond du lac High School and its affect on sexual abuse
survivors. "This is absolutely one of the best pieces I've read in a long time," Filak said. Doctor Filak says he
doesn’t see the concerns that were expressed by school administration officials concerning a questionable photograph, or descriptive words. He says the school’s decision to censor the paper is
misguided. "Everybody has the right to say after something's been published, hey I'm little concerned about this, I don't think you did that right or congratulations I think you did do the right thing," Filak said. "But in this case, they're (school district) is trying to take out a fly with a howitzer."
Filak says the school’s crackdown sends the wrong message to
students and the community. The superintendent issued a mandate that all stories must be reviewed first by the principal before they are published.
