9-11-13 nfdl officials look at new approach to curb train whistles

Less than  week after the North Fond du Lac Village Board met in special session  nd voted  to close a road that crosses the railroad tracks...the board is meeting again Wednesday to consider another option that may speed up the process.   Village Administrator Chuck Hornung says vacating Lakeshore Drive at the crossing could reduce the time it takes to get the railroad to stop sounding the train whistles at the crossing.  "The closure, which was approved last Friday, can take up to 60 to 90 days working with the Office of the Commissioner of Railroad.  If we take the course of vacating that portion of Lakeshore Drive, its a little simpler and a little quicker,"  Hornung told WFDL news.   Village residents have complained about non stop train whistles that started September first when  the Federal Railroad Administration lifted a “quiet zone”  in the village.  Hornung says  since then the train horns have been sounding up to 150 times a day.  Now Hornung says there appears to be a light at the end of the tunnel.
