What started off as a dispute between two neighbors led to
a packed meeting room at the Taycheeda Town Hall this week over the discharge of
firearms in the township. Some residents would like to see the town enact an ordinance
prohibiting or limiting the use of firearms in the town. Fond du lac County Sheriff’s captain Rick
Olig says the issue was raised after residents complained that a neighbor
was target practicing or shooting at birds especially in the early morning hours. "It stems from that yes. I went back and looked at this year and we've had like 12 complaints," Olig said. Town chairman Jerome Guelig says he believes the issue has
been blown out of proportion and admits he was surprised
so many people showed up at the meeting. Guelig says while the property owner has a right to fire his
gun…he also has the responsibility of being a good neighbor. "This guy has got to control himself. Like I told his son (at the meeting) let's cut it down," Guelig said. "We can't deny him hunting on his property but the excess shooting, let's see if we can alleviate it." In the end the town board did not take any action.
