12-3-12 can't depend on snow sled dog race

Sled dog teams from throughout the midwest will be converging on Fond du Lac this weekend for the annual Can’t Depend on Snow sled dog race.  For the second year in a row Fond du lac’s Jeanna Giese will be participating with her three Siberian huskies.  Jeanna became famous nine years ago when she became the first person to survive rabies after getting the vaccine after developing the virus.   The Can’t Depend on Snow sled dog race starts at 10am Saturday at Rolling Meadows Golf course.  All the proceeds go to the Make a Wish Foundation.

12-3-12 strange odor

Fond du lac fire officials aren’t sure what the sulfur-like smell in the air is.   Fire chief Pete O’Leary sasy the department received several calls from Fond du lac residents over the holiday weekend.

O’Leary says it doesn’t appear to be caused by the paper mills near Kaukauna because the wind was out of the south. 

12-3-12 uw system faculty

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Nearly 1,200 faculty members left the University of Wisconsin System during the 2011-13 biennium. The report compiled for the Board of Regents' business committee says 657 faculty members retired during that span. All of them were tenured faculty. Nearly 500 faculty members resigned. Of them 185 were tenured and 306 were on a tenure track.

12-3-12 abortion law

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Federal appeals court arguments are set for Tuesday morning in a lawsuit challenging Wisconsin's new law requiring abortion providers to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals. Republicans who wrote the law say it's designed to ensure continuity of care. But Planned Parenthood and Affiliated Medical Services filed a federal lawsuit alleging the law would force the organizations to close two clinics in Appleton and Milwaukee.

12-3-12 budget committee approves medicaid proposal

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The Legislature's Republican-controlled budget committee has approved Gov. Scott Walker's proposal that delays kicking 72,000 people off of the state's Medicaid program. Walker would pay for continuing that coverage through March by delaying expanding Medicaid coverage for 83,000 childless adults earning below the poverty level. Walker says those losing coverage need more time to sign up for private health insurance through the online exchange.

12-3-12 mining proposal

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Gogebic Taconite has submitted a scaled-down sampling plan that would make blasting a last resort for a huge iron mine in far northwestern Wisconsin. The company originally wanted to remove 4,000 tons of rock from five sites in the Penokee Hills. The company planned to use excavation equipment or explosives. The revised plan calls for removing samples from three sites instead of five using excavation equipment. The company would turn to blasting if it can't get enough materials.

12-2-13 pressure cooker explodes at fdl restaurant

Nobody was injured when a pressure cooker exploded in the kitchen of a  Fond du lac restaurant yesterday.  Fond du lac firefighters were called to the Casa Del Taquila restaurant on North Peters Avenue yesterday.  The Fire Department says the restaurant was evacuated, nobody was injured but the kitchen sustained some damage.
