9-13-13 acid spill in oshkosh

OSHKOSH, Wis. (AP) — Oshkosh authorities have lifted an evacuation order after an acid spill at a chemical plant on the city's south side.  Company officials say about 600 gallons of muriatic acid spilled at Hydrite Chemical Thursday. The spill was reported just before 1 p.m.  The acid spilled from a crack in a tank which holds about 7,000 gallons. Firefighters say a barrier previously set up to contain spills did its job.  Police asked people to stay away from the spill area. Some residents were asked to stay inside, close all doors and windows and turn off air conditioning.  Oshkosh police say the evacuations were a precaution and there is no great danger to anyone who does not come in contact with the chemical.  No injuries are reported.
