BANCROFT, Wis. (AP) — A Bancroft man is charged with mistreating an animal and causing its death after he allegedly got sick of his dog and beat it with a hammer. Twenty six year-old Cody Phillips was arrested Tuesday. The criminal complaint says that on Jan. 19, Phillips woke up to find the dog defecated in his trailer home. When he tried to pull the dog outside, it growled and Phillips told deputies he panicked and hit it in the head with a hammer. He allegedly said he hit the dog twice more to end its suffering. The complaint says the dog had a broken jaw and muzzle and blood coming out of its ears.
