6-19-14 water, water everywhere, but is it safe to drink?

Between flood warnings and a recent manure spill in the area, rural homeowners are wondering about the quality of their drinking water.  The only way to know the quality is to test it, says Gloria Smedema, Sanitarian for Fond du Lac County.  “With all this rain and the possible impact to groundwater,” Smedema states, “now is a great time to collect a water sample from your private well. Have it analyzed for both bacteria and nitrate levels.”  The cost of the two tests through the County Health Department is $40. Testing is free for families with a baby younger than a year and females who are pregnant or may become pregnant. Infants and pregnant women are at higher risk for nitrate poisoning. Well water test kits are available at certified water labs including Fond du Lac County Health Department at 160 South Macy, Fond du Lac. 6-19-14 woman found naked outside waupun apartment

A Waupun woman was treated at the hospital for an ankle injury after she was found naked outside her Waupun apartment.  Waupun police chief Dale Heeringa says officers were called to the apartment unit on West Jefferson Street early Wednesday morning.  Heeringa says the woman’s boyfriend was found sleeping on a couch inside the residence.  He was arrested on a probation violation.

6-19-14 lightnng strikes car in waupun

Here’s something you don’t see every day.  Waupun police Chief Dale Heeringa says a lightning strike apparently turned the lights on in a vehicle parked in the Homan auto dealership early Tuesday morning.

Heeringa says an officer on patrol noticed the car lights come on and checked out the situation…but  found no one inside the vehicle.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The backlash over a request for information about disabled students in Wisconsin's voucher school program is looking a lot like the Republican response to a similar U.S. Department of Justice investigation in Louisiana. Wisconsin Republicans say DOJ is working with the state Department of Public Instruction to intimidate voucher schools and undermine the program.

6-19-14 wolf hunt

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin's Department of Natural Resources is planning to ask its board next week to limit the total kill in the state's third annual wolf hunt to 156 wolves. That would be a dramatic scale-back. Agency officials say they want to slow down after hunters killed 257 wolves last year, six more than their limit.

6-19-14 teens killed in washington county car crash

KEWASKUM, Wis. (AP) — The State Patrol says wet pavement from heavy rain may have caused a car two teens were in to lose control and hit a deputy's squad car head-on. The teens died in the crash this morning in Kewaskum in Washington County. The sheriff's deputy suffered minor injuries.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Former U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson is urging Congress to pass legislation requiring Medicare to cover obesity medicines for seniors. The ex-Wisconsin governor was in Lansing today drawing attention to the obesity problem. Thompson says some overweight people need medications because of genetics and metabolism.
