5-19-14 zero traffic fatalities on fdl county roadways

Fond du Lac County is on a record pace when it comes to the fewest number of traffic fatalities.  Sheriff’s captain Rick Olig says there have been zero traffic fatalities on Fond du Lac County roadways so far this year.  Olig says that hasn't happened since at least 1978, the last year that records were available.  Olig says one factor may be the unusually long winter weather that may have reduced traffic on area roads.  Olig says he’s crossing his finger the trend continues.

5-19-14 burglary spree suspects

The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office says two men arrested in connection with a rash of storage unit burglaries in Washington County are suspects in similar burglaries in Fond du lac county.  Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Lieutenant Cameron McGee says the 54 year old Milwaukee man and his 29 year old nephew are suspected of breaking into storage facilities in the western portion of the county.  McGee says many of the break-ins occurred during the day.  The Washington County Sheriff’s Office says over 600 items were recovered at four different locations.  Stolen items include trailers, motorcycles, ATVs and firearms.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Governor Scott Walker frequently touts all he has done for Wisconsin's veterans since taking office more than three years ago as he runs for re-election.  But some veterans say Walker's refusal to pardon a decorated Iraqi war veteran and the governor's support for legislation they oppose show he doesn't have their true interests in mind.  Jason Johns is an Iraqi combat veteran, Republican lobbyist for veterans groups and a former deputy secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs under Walker.  He says veterans who previously wouldn't think twice about voting for Walker now aren't so sure, in part because of a law Walker signed affecting lawsuits brought by veterans exposed to asbestos.  Walker defends his record, saying his priority has been putting the needs of Wisconsin's veterans ahead of politics.

5-19-14 wisconsin abortion

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A federal trial to determine whether a Wisconsin law that requires abortion providers to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals is constitutional is set to get underway later this month.  Planned Parenthood and Affiliated Medical Services filed a lawsuit in July arguing the law would force clinics in Appleton and Milwaukee to close because abortion providers at the facilities lack admitting privileges.  The groups contend the law unconstitutionally restricts abortion availability because it would force women to travel hundreds of miles further to facilities in Madison and Milwaukee where providers have such privileges.  State attorneys counter the law ensures continuity of care if a woman develops complications following an abortion.  The trial is set to begin on May 27th before U.S. District Judge William Conley.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The 20 highest-paid state employees last year worked for the Wisconsin Investment Board, which manages the investments of the Wisconsin Retirement System.  All 20 made more than $300,000. Chief investment officer David C. Villa took home a state-high $834,000.  The Department of Corrections paid the most of any state agency last year. The agency's 10,000 employees made a total of $474 million, with a median salary of $46,000.  The investment board's 159 workers made an average of $151,000, highest in the state. The next-highest average was in prosecutors' offices, where 442 employees made an average of $71,000.  The state Department of Administration paid a total of $1.6 billion in salaries last year. About 3 percent of the payments were for overtime.

5-19-14 hwy 41 rollover accidents

A woman and her children escaped serious injury when their car rolled over on Highway 41 and started on fire.   The accident happened in the northbound lanes of 41 near Winnebago Street.  Meanwhile two vehicles involved in a collision on Highway 41 crashed through a fence near the Johnson Street on ramp Sunday afternoon.

5-19-14 atv accident results in serious injuries

An 18 year old man was seriously injured in an ATV accident in Fond du Lac.  Rescue personnel were called to the scene about 3pm Saturday at the City's ATV Park located southwest of Highway 41 and Hickory Street.  Upon arrival paramedics located an 18 year-old man who sustained serious injuries when he fell from his ATV.  Due to the extent of his injuries Flight For Life Helicopter was called to the scene.  A landing zone was established in a parking lot nearby.  Paramedics 

utilized the Fire Department's 6-wheel ATV Medical Unit to transport the patient from the remote area in the park to the awaiting helicopter.  The patient was transported to a nearby trauma center to be treated for his injures.
