7-18-13 fdl fire

On July 17, 2013 at 10:50 AM the Fond du Lac Fire Department was dispatched to a reported fire at 585 East Division Street. Alliant Energy was on the scene working on a gas meter and piping when a valve allowed gas to escape, which set off a small fire involving the exterior of the house and nearby shrubbery. The fire also caused the power line to the home to be severed.  Alliant Energy personnel extinguished the fire prior to our arrival.  Upon arrival, fire crews investigated the damage and searched for extension of fire into the structure.  Alliant Energy remained on scene to remedy the situation.  The Fond du Lac Police Department assisted with traffic control. 


 

7-18-13 paddleboard safety

The Wisconsin DNR says with the growing popularity of paddleboards a safety course is a good idea for beginners and a great refresher for experienced paddlers.  Conservation warden Todd Schaller says no matter what level of experience all paddlers should wear a life jacket.  Schaller says, knock on wood,  there have not been any paddleboard related drownings  on Wisconsin waterways.  "...and we want to keep it that way,"  Schaller told AM 1170 WFDL's Between the Lines program.

7-18-13 railroad underpass update

Work remains on schedule for the Pioneer Road railroad underpass project.  Fond du lac County Highway Commissioner Tom Jahnke says work is essentially done on the Morris Street roundabout and railroad bridge.  Jahnke says work to build the road under the railroad bridge will begin soon.

The new underpass is scheduled to open to traffic this fall.

7-18-13 wisconsin power and light seeks electric rate increase

Alliant Energy’s Wisconsin Power and Light has filed for an electric rate increase.  Wisconsin Power and Light is asking for a 1.9 percent increase in retail electric  rates for next year due to expected higher electric fuel costs next year.  Alliant spokesman Scott Reigstad says the plan includes a monthly increase of approximately $1.14 for the typical residential customer.  Riegstad says Alliant hopes to use savings from last year to reduce next year’s increase.  If approved the plan would become effective January first.

7-18-13 legionnaires disease sickens 18 in milwaukee county

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Health officials are investigating an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease that has sickened 18 people in Milwaukee County. Fourteen of the cases involve adults in Milwaukee with underlying health conditions. No deaths have been reported. But a Milwaukee Health Department official tells the Journal Sentinel about a fourth of those infected remain hospitalized.

7-18-13 federal judge refuses to lift stay on new abortion law

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A federal judge has refused to lift a temporary stay on a crucial section of a new Wisconsin abortion law. The language requires abortion providers to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals. Planned Parenthood has filed a federal lawsuit arguing two abortion clinics in Appleton and Milwaukee would have to close because their providers lack admitting privileges.

7-18-13 volunteer searchers look for missing two year old

BALSAM LAKE, Wis. (AP) — Volunteer searchers continue to arrive to help look for a missing 2-year-old boy in Polk County. Isaiah Theis (teyes) has been missing from his rural home near Centuria since yesterday evening. His mother tells Polk County sheriff's deputies her son was last seen playing with his brother.
