6-3-14 fdl county sheriff's race

There will be a contested race for Fond du lac County sheriff in the August 12^th primary election.  Fond du Lac police detective Bill Ledger filed his monimation papers with the Fond du lac County Clerk’s Office Monday.   Clerk Lisa Freiberg says Ledger submitted 725 signatures.  He needed at least 500 signatures

to have his name placed on the ballot.  Ledger  is running as a Repbulican against  incumbent Sheriff Mick Fink.  Fink collected 962 signatures.  Ledger will be a guest  at 9:30am Tuesday on AM 1170's Between the Lines program.

6-2-14 airshow crash

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (AP) — Police say a small plane crashed at an air show in central Wisconsin, killing the 47-year-old pilot.  The crash happened about 12:20 p.m. Sunday at the Stevens Point Municipal Airport. Police say the plane was performing aerial maneuvers when it went down in a wooded area about 1,000 feet east of the airport runway.  The pilot's name hasn't been released.

Police ended the show and secured the scene. The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board will conduct an investigation.  Melvin Burskey of Neenah was at the show. He tells Stevens Point Journal Media he couldn't believe what he saw. He says there was a puff of smoke and then the plane went down.  The air show lineup was to include aerobatic performances and World War II aircraft displays.

6-2-14 citywide bi-annual water main flushing

The City of Fond du Lac Water Utility has scheduled bi-annual citywide unidirectional water main flushing to begin on Monday, June 2^nd in the southeast section of the city. Flushing will continue in the northeast neighborhoods on Tuesday, the southwest area on Wednesday morning and finish in the northwest quadrant Wednesday afternoon, June 4^th. Flushing operations will take place each day between the hours of 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM. The city is divided into quarters with Main Street, 4^th Street and Western Avenue used as boundary lines. If unexpected problems occur, the schedule could extend into Thursday.  The objective of this program is to improve overall water quality. Flushing rids the water of mineral sediment by scouring and cleaning the pipes. When water is systematically pulled in one general direction by opening hydrants, these sediments are flushed out.   During hydrant flushing, residents may notice a slight discoloration of water. This is temporary and poses no health risk. However, you are asked not do laundry or use automatic ice machines until the water runs clear from your tap. It is advisable to avoid running water while the crew is flushing on your street. If homeowners encounter discolored water after City flushing has occurred, water service pipes to individual homes can be flushed by running a cold water tap for about 5 minutes. If pressure or volume seems low, check faucet screens for trapped particles. If you still experience problems with water quality or pressure after the flushing event, please contact the City of Fond du Lac Water Utility at 322-3680. 

6-2-14 girl killed by falling tree at wi campsite

BARABOO, Wis. (AP) — Authorities say a tree fell on a tent at Devil's Lake State Park over the weekend, killing an 11-year-old girl and injuring two others.  The Sauk County sheriff's office says three people were in the tent Sunday morning at the Ice Age Campground. Rescue officials responded about 4 a.m. and found the girl and her father trapped under the tree. A 14-year-old boy was able to climb out of the tent.  Officials freed the man and the girl from the tent. The girl was pronounced dead at the scene, and the man and boy were taken to a hospital.  The park is in Baraboo, which is about 40 miles northwest of Madison.

6-2-14 manure spill-public health

The Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer says test results have come back negative on water samples taken following a major manure spill at a mega dairy farm near Pipe.  An estimated 50,000 gallons spilled into Pipe Creek,  floating downstream to Lake Winnebago.  Signs have been posted at Columbia Park warning people to stay out of the water.  Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says residents who live in the area are advised to get their well water tested.  But Mueller says the DNR says its unlikely the spill would affect the drinking water.  Mueller says tests on water from wells at Columbia Park have come back negative.

6-2-14 manure spill-residents

A resident who lives on Lake Winnebago says while he is upset at the environmental damage caused by a large manure spill at an area dairy farm…he’s more upset that downstream property owners weren’t notified.  Paul Osterholm lives on the lake near Pipe Creek.  WFDL news broke the story about the spill.  "Thanks to Sunny 97.7  I read about it on your website,"  Osterholm said.  Osterholm says he is upset that property owners weren't officially notified by the DNR or county officials.   Osterholm says he’s also concerned about the environmental damage and potential threat to human health.

6-2-14 powerball winner in kohler

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Someone who bought a Powerball ticket in Sheboygan County over the weekend has won $1 million.  Wisconsin lottery officials said on Sunday the ticket was sold at Q Mart in Kohler.  The ticket matched five numbers in Saturday's drawing but not the Powerball. No one else matched all six numbers either, so the new jackpot for Wednesday's drawing is $192 million. That's about $115 million if taken as a lump sum.  The winning numbers Saturday were 15, 27, 31, 34 and 48. The Powerball was 1.
