LA CROSSE, Wis. (AP) — Convenience store operator Kwik Trip has become the latest company to try to make health care more convenient for employees, opening a clinic at its La Crosse headquarters.

The clinic will serve about 3,000 Kwik Trip employees and their families in the La Crosse area and provide online services for them and 8,000 other workers.  Kwik Trip has 452 stores in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa.  The clinic is operated by Marathon Health For Life, a national worksite health care company.

LA CROSSE, Wis. (AP) — Police say the driver found dead in a car that plunged down an embankment and broke through the ice on a La Crosse creek was a student at Winona State University.  Divers recovered the body of 21-year-old Ellen Marie Ahmann, of Woodbury, Minn., from her vehicle submerged in 6 to 8 feet of water on Swift Creek early New Year's Day.  A bus driver called dispatchers Wednesday about 1:30 a.m. when he noticed tire tracks leaving the street and heading over the 40-foot embankment.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Gov. Scott Walker's administration has finally launched a website detailing state government expenditures.  The state budget that Walker signed into law in June 2011 called for the site. The Department of Administration has been working to put it together since October 2011. The agency launched the first version of it Thursday morning. DOA Deputy Secretary Chris Schoenherr, who is managing the project, says the task has been more difficult than he anticipated.  The site contains millions of searchable entries detailing expenditures by state agencies, the Legislature, state courts and the University of Wisconsin System.  Schoenherr cautioned that the site provides a deeper level of detail for some entities than others and lacks context explaining the purchases. He says the site is a work in progress.  The site's address is openbook.wi.gov.

1-3-14 car vs. pedestrian

A Fond du Lac man escaped serious injury when he was struck by a car at an intersection on the north side of town.  Fond du Lac Fire Department spokesman Troy Haase says rescue personnel were called to the intersection of  Scott and Doty streets around noon Thursday.  Haase says the victim was treated at the scene and then transported to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.  That portion of Scott Street was blocked and traffic was re-routed for a period of time.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — University of Wisconsin System officials have released the names of the finalists vying to become the next system president.  The candidates include Raymond Cross, chancellor of the UW Colleges and Extension; Peter Garland, executive vice chancellor of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education; and Robert King, president of the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education.

A Board of Regents selection committee plans to interview the finalists on Monday and recommend one to the full board. The board expects to announce a hiring decision on Wednesday.  Kevin Reilly officially stepped down as president on Tuesday. He announced in July he would resign at the end of 2013 after taking intense criticism from Republican lawmakers for allowing system campuses to build massive reserves while raising tuition year after year.

1-2-14 packer playoff tickets still available

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — It seems unthinkable that Lambeau Field wouldn't sell out for a Packers playoff game. Yet thousands of tickets are still available for Sunday's wild-card game against the 49ers.

The team says about 7,500 tickets were still available as of Wednesday afternoon.  According to NFL rules, the game has to sell out by Thursday at 3:40 p.m. to avoid a local TV blackout. That's 72 hours before kickoff. However, the league has given extensions in previous years for playoff games, and it's monitoring the Packers' progress.  Part of the reason tickets are available is that an early deadline for season-ticket holders to reserve tickets arrived when the team was mired in a five-game winless streak.  In addition, temperatures are expected to be frigid Sunday.
