CHICAGO (AP) — An appellate court in Chicago has heard arguments on a hotly debated Wisconsin law requiring abortion providers to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals.  Tuesday's hour-long hearing at 7th Circuit Court of Appeals will help the three-judge panel decide whether to lift a temporary block on the law imposed by a lower court.  Judges aggressively questioned an attorney defending Wisconsin's law. Judge Richard Posner repeatedly broached the question of why legislators singled out abortion clinics for the requirement and did not extend the law to other outpatient clinics performing more dangerous procedures. Posner says the Wisconsin law "sounds irrational."  Critics say the law on admitting privileges is a back door approach to stymie abortion rights. Supporters say the law protects women's health.

12-4-13 deer hunt-schaller

The new DNR Chief Warden says no problems were reported during the just completed gun-deer season with a new rule allowing rifles.  A handful of townships across the state voted to ban rifle use during the hunt,  but DNR warden Todd Schaller says he did not hear of any problems.   Meanwhile Schaller says overall it was a safe hunt…with eight hunting incidents.  "Eight hunting incidents total is below the ten year average which is nine,"  Schaller told AM 1170 WFDL's Between the Lines program.  "It speaks highly of the hunters themselves."   Schaller says six hunting incidents occurred on the opening weekend.  Overall deer harvest numbers are down.

12-4-13 deer hunt harvest numbers down

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin wildlife officials say hunters killed 7 percent fewer deer during the 2013 nine-day gun season than last year.  The Department of Natural Resources released preliminary data Tuesday that shows hunters killed 226,582 deer, down from 243,739 deer last year. They took 15 percent fewer bucks but almost the same number of antlerless deer, 128,817 compared with 128,917 last year. DNR officials say cold weather during the first part of the season kept hunters from spending long hours in the woods. Hunters indicated in an agency survey they felt the weather was the worst they'd seen in the five years the agency has done the survey.  The DNR reported a total of eight-shooting related incidents. No one was killed.

12-3-13 fdl woman charged in murder of husband

A Fond du lac woman has officially been charged in connection with the death of her husband.  Eve Nance is charged with first degree intentional homicide and hiding a corpse in the shooting death of
37 year old Timothy Nance.  Eve Nance’s sister Tina Ewell has been released from jail and is not charged.  Fond du Lac police chief Bill Lamb says investigators believe Eve Nance shot and killed her husband after learning he was having an affair and intended to divorce her.  According to a criminal complaint Eve Nance said there was a struggle over a firearm inside their Fond du lac home and that the gun fired twice in rapid succession.    An autopsy determined the victim died from two gunshot wounds to the head.  According to the complaint Eve Nance carried the body by herself and placed it in her car, drove  to  Milwaukee and dumped the body in a wooded area.  After being directed to a location by Eve Nance, Fond du Lac police were able to locate the body.  Nance is expected to make her initial court appearance Wednesday.

 

12-3-13 heavy snow, arctic cold in the forecast

Keep your eyes on the weather this week, as a series of snowstorms will be moving across the northern half of the state bringing up to 17 inches of snow in far northwestern Wisconsin. Following the snow, arctic air will move in across most of the state dropping daytime high temperatures to the single digits in the north and teens in the south. The cold and heavy snow could cause treacherous driving conditions.  Now is the time to get ready for the storm.   Get your vehicles and home ready and plan for slick roads if you are traveling. Here are a few simple things you can do:

Have an emergency winter weather survival kit in your vehicle. Your kit should include water, snack food such as energy bars or raisins, first aid kit and booster cables. If you have a cell phone make sure you have a power adapter you can plug into the lighter. Make sure your home emergency kit is stocked with food that can be stored and eaten without electricity, in case there is a power outage. 12-3-12 salvation army red kettle campaign

After struggling last year and coming up just short…the Fond du lac Salvation Army hopes to turn things around this holiday season.  The annual Red Kettle fundraising campaign is in full swing.  Salvation army spokesperson Denise Schaefer  says it’s the organization’s most important fundraiser of the year.  The goal this year is $156,000.  Schaefer says  the Salvation Army has other important programs to help the needy during the holiday season including Toys for Tots.  The Toys for Tots distribution is set for December 18th.

12-3-12 can't depend on snow sled dog race

Sled dog teams from throughout the midwest will be converging on Fond du Lac this weekend for the annual Can’t Depend on Snow sled dog race.  For the second year in a row Fond du lac’s Jeanna Giese will be participating with her three Siberian huskies.  Jeanna became famous nine years ago when she became the first person to survive rabies after getting the vaccine after developing the virus.   The Can’t Depend on Snow sled dog race starts at 10am Saturday at Rolling Meadows Golf course.  All the proceeds go to the Make a Wish Foundation.
