8-1-13 New Revenue For Oshkosh Corp

Wisconsin’s maker of military vehicles finds another way to make money. The Oshkosh Corporation cites strong sales of commercial construction lifts, in reporting a quarterly profit of 148-million dollars. That’s 1.67-a-share for the company’s fiscal third-quarter from April-through-June, up from 84-cents a share at the same time a year ago. Sales were up by just over two-percent, to two-point-two billion dollars. Oshkosh has been losing defense business as the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have been winding down. The company says its sales of aerial construction platforms, scissor lifts, and tele-handlers grew by over 15-and-a-half percent in the last quarter. The firm says the demand was caused by higher activity from builders and leasing companies. Oshkosh says it now expects its full-year earnings to be 3.60-to-3.70 a share, up from its previous estimate of 2.90-to-3.15.

8-1-13 Broadband Survey

Fond du Lac County residents and businesses have another chance to voice their opinion in order to assess the high speed Internet needs and gaps in the County.  The Public Service Commission is looking for assistance in another broadband survey.  Fond du Lac County Director of Administration Erin Gerred says last year and earlier this year, the county and the Fond du Lac County Economic Development Corporation partnered to distribute both a residential and a business broadband survey aimed at learning the needs of the County’s residents and businesses.  Gerred says if you did not complete a previous survey, you can log online to fill it out or obtain a paper copy by calling 920-929-3156.  The deadline to complete the survey is August 15^th.

8-1-13 Skyward Staying Put

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (AP) — A Stevens Point company plans to expand after deciding to stay in Wisconsin.

Leaders of Skyward Incorporated celebrated Wednesday with community members and elected officials.

Officials of the information system company say they were able to stay in Wisconsin thanks to a bill supported by both Republican and Democratic lawmakers.

Skyward had threatened to leave Wisconsin if it didn't win the contract to run a new statewide student information system.

The Legislature's budget committee voted to essentially undo a contract won by a Minnesota company to run the system. Instead, multiple companies including Skyward could provide the services.

WAOW-TV reports Skyward expects to add more than 1,000 jobs during the next 10 years. The company hopes to break ground next spring on an expansion project to house those employees.

8-1-13 World Record Attempt at EAA

OSHKOSH, Wis. (AP) — A 19-year-old Australian is aiming for the Guinness World Record for the youngest person to fly solo around the world.

If he's successful, Ryan Campbell will unseat Californian Jack Wiegand, who set the record in June when he completed a global flight at age 21.

Campbell left Wollongong, Australia, on June 30th. He aims to finish his route on September 7th. He is spending much of this week in Oshkosh, at AirVenture, one of the nation's largest air shows.

Campbell says he wanted to fly from the time he was 6. He flew solo at 15, got his pilot's license at 17 and earned his commercial pilot's license at 18.

He says he hopes his success inspires more young people to consider careers in aviation.

8-1-13 Fatal Fire

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A Wisconsin woman whose three sons were killed in a house fire last September wants to recent her statements against her husband and brother-in-law. Sharon Wand was badly burned in the fire at the family's Argyle home. She wrote to the Wisconsin State Journal that her husband, Armin Wand, and his 19-year-old brother, Jeremy Wand, did not set the fire.  Sharon Wand says her statements to police that implicated the Wand brothers were made while she was on pain medication.  The fire killed three of the couple's four children as well as the fetus Sharon Wand was carrying.  Armin Wand was given three consecutive life sentences in April after he agreed to plead guilty. Jeremy Wand agreed to a similar deal but has asked to withdraw his guilty pleas.

8-1-13 Teen Death Hartford

WEST BEND, Wis. (AP) — A 19-year-old Hubertus man has been charged with first-degree intentional homicide in the death of a Hartford woman.

WISN-TV reports Daniel Bartelt was charged Wednesday.

Court documents say 19-year-old Jessie Blodgett was found in her bed by her mother on July 15th. She had ligature marks on her neck.

WISN-TV reports investigators believe Blodgett's ankles and wrists were tied, and she was gagged and strangled. Police don't have a motive yet, but say the two had dated in high school and were spending time together.  Bartelt was arrested July 17 after he admitted to a separate attack of a woman in a Richfield park on July 12. He faces three felony counts in connection with that attack, in which the woman says she was cut with a knife.

8-1-13 Wisconsin Protests

No arrests during Capitol sing along

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — There have been no arrests during the daily sing along inside the Wisconsin Capitol because a Madison television station got a permit for a similar event.

Russell Bruhn, news director of WMTV, says the NBC station got the permit for Wednesday to see how the process worked. He says the station got the permit for its own usage and not anyone else's.

Capitol Police watched but did not arrest any of the 50 or more singers inside the rotunda.

A federal judge has said the state can require permits for groups of more than 20, and since last week police have issued more than 120 tickets.

The singers argue they don't need a permit to exercise their free speech rights.
