MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Gov. Scott Walker has vetoed provisions in the state budget that would have required municipalities to disclose their spending to the state Department of Administration. The budget would have required counties as well as any cities, villages and towns with more than 5,000 people to disclose spending on their operations, contracts and grants to a publicly searchable DOA website known as OpenBook Wisconsin by Sept. 1, 2016.

7-2 rain keeps mosquitoes away

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — It might not sound like it makes any sense, but all the rain southern Wisconsin has seen is actually keeping mosquitoes at bay. University of Wisconsin-Madison entomologist Phil Pellitteri says water needs to stand for 10 to 12 days for mosquitoes to breed.

7-2-13 voter photo id-league of women voters

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The League of Women Voters wants the Wisconsin Supreme Court to review an appellate decision that found the state's voter photo identification law is constitutional. The league's attorneys filed a petition Friday asking the court to take the case. Three of the court's seven justices must vote to accept it. It's unclear when that vote might happen.

7-2-13 operation dry water-results

The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office participated in Operation Dry Water June 28-30, as part of a nationally coordinated effort to reduce the number of accidents and fatalities related to boating under the influence (BUI). The mission of Operation Dry Water also brings awareness and education to recreational boaters about the dangers of alcohol and drug use on the water.

During the Operation Dry Water, deputies were out in force looking for boaters whose blood alcohol content (BAC) exceeds the state limit of .08. The weekend included increased patrols as well as boater education.   During Operation Dry Water deputies worked 7 ½ hours on Lake Winnebago. The boating traffic was limited due to the water conditions and wind. Deputies assigned to this effort also led the search effort on Lake Winnebago for the missing Wind Surfer, spending 2 ½ hours searching.
Over the weekend, deputies made contact with 27 boaters/occupants on 8 vessels, issuing 1 boating citation and 6 warnings for safety violations and 2 non boating violations. Operation Dry Water is a nationwide education and enforcement initiative launched by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) in 2009 in partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard.

7-2-13 fdl woman gets prison in heroin overdose death case

A Fond du Lac woman convicted of supplying heroin that led to the death of a Fond du lac man is going to prison.   On Monday Fond du Lac Judge Gary Sharpe sentenced  Juliann Bliefnick to five years in prison followed by nine years extended supervision.  Bliefnick was also ordered to pay the family of the victim more than $13,000 to cover funeral expenses.  In April Bliefnick pleaded guilty to reckless homicide in the death of 23 year old Tyler Hass.  Hass was found dead at his mother’s home last Thanksgiving.  Police say they were able to link Bliefnick as supplying the fatal dose of heroin.

 

  

 

 

 


 

 

 

 

7-2-13 fdl man enters not guilty plea in winnebago drive crash

A Fond du lac man who is accused of driving his car into a Fond du Lac woman walking along Winnebago Drive has entered not guilty pleas.  Forty seven year old Aarron Schmitz, was arraigned in Fond du lac County Circuit Court Monday on charges of reckless injury and bail jumping.  Investigators say Schmitz  veered off Winnebago Drive near Bechaud Beach Drive May 14th  striking and critically injuring 46 year old Traci Luther of Fond du lac.  Sheriff’s captain Rick Olig says Schmitz later told investigators he smoke marijuana and  drank a bottle of whiskey the night before.   A request to lower the $25,000 cash bond was denied.

 

7-1-13 serious injury motorcycle vs. suv accident

The Dodge County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a motor vehicle traffic crash with serious injuries.  They were assisted at the scene by Juneau Police, Clyman Fire and First Responders, Juneau EMS, Beaver Dam Paramedics, Flight For Life, and DCERT.  At 5:06 PM Dodge County Communications received a report of a multiple-vehicle crash with injuries on STH 26 near Hogsback Rd in the Township of Clyman.  The crash involved an SUV and a motorcycle.  Both subjects on the motorcycle were injured, one of which was serious/critical and flown by Flight For Life.  The other was transported by ambulance to Beaver Dam Community Hospital.  The occupants of the SUV were not injured.   The crash is under investigation by the Crash Investigation Team (CIT).  Initial investigation shows the crash occurred during passing maneuvers.  Neither of the cycle occupants was wearing a helmet.
