2-15-14 sturgeon season ends

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (AP) — This year's sturgeon spearing season has come to an end on Lake Winnebago. And, it's one for the record books in terms of size.  The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says 95 sturgeon weighed more than 100 pounds — the most registered in a single season.
The DNR says the six-day total on Lake Winnebago and the upriver lakes is 1,854 sturgeon.  John Skahen, of Chilton, had the biggest catch this year with a 161-pound sturgeon.  Spearing on the upriver lakes came to a close Monday. DNR biologist Ryan Koenigs says Gale "Buckshot" Zietlow has been spearing for 55 years, has taken two sturgeon from the upriver lakes, but never one from Lake Winnebago. That came to an end this season when Zietlow finally speared a 73-pound sturgeon.
