2-11-14 wi legislator nixes uw record exemptions

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The head of the state Assembly's colleges committee says he won't allow a vote on a bill that creates sweeping open record exemptions for University of Wisconsin System research.
Rep. Mike Kuglitsch, a New Berlin Republican, has introduced a bill that would allow UW institutions to conduct secret classified government research. The bill also exempts all materials tied to any commercial, scientific or technical research from the state's open records law.  The Assembly colleges committee plans to hold a hearing on the bill Monday. But the committee's chairman, Rep. Steve Nass, a Whitewater Republican, has refused to call a vote on the bill as long as the broad exemptions remain in the language.
